Xander Bogaerts 1 on 1 interview with Peter Gammons

Xander started for the first time in Fenway Park.

BOSTON: Until Wednesday, Xander Bogaerts had never started or hit in Fenway Park. Though he went 0-for-3, and saw a total of just four pitches, he swung at good pitches and stayed with an up-the-middle approach that suggested a degree of confidence and maturity in what he was doing.
The 20-year-old felt little distress about being held hitless. He was robbed by Adam Jones on a diving, shoestring catch. (“I thought I had a hit on that one,” he said.) He grounded into a fielder’s choice. (“I really wanted that pitch,” Bogaerts said after reviewing video. “I missed that one big time.”)  Finally, with none out and a runner on second in the seventh inning, Bogaerts — looking to advance the runner to third by hitting the ball to the right side — lined out to second, getting the placement right on an inside fastball but failing to get the ball on the ground.
“I hit a line drive, and just didn’t do the job. But I always have my approach,” Bogaerts said.
Indeed, the fact that he stayed in the middle of the field in all three plate appearances points to a player who was under control, as did Bogaerts’ work at third base, where he showed quickness in catching a couple of foul pop-ups by the plate while also tagging out Brian Roberts on a stolen base attempt in what proved a pivotal sequence of the game, one batter before Manny Machado launched a homer into orbit.
In addition to those milestones, Bogaerts also confronted another first — this one hardly the stuff of childhood dreams. In the bottom of the eighth, Bogaerts was replaced by pinch-hitter Mike Carp with two on and two out to face right-hander Tommy Hunter.
Hunter has been dominant against right-handed hitting,” noted manager John Farrell, alluding to the reliever’s .128/.180/.136 line against righties and .289/.316/.492 mark entering the game against lefties, “and I felt like that was the spot for Carp.”
The last time Bogaerts — viewed as a future offensive star — was replaced by a pinch-hitter?
“Never, man,” said Bogaerts. “Never. Never.
“But this is the big leagues. It’s not the minor leagues. Every game, it counts,” he added. “Tommy Hunter, when I saw him come up, back in [extended spring training in 2011] I hit a home run off of him, so I was pretty confident. But back then, he wasn’t throwing hard — he was like 93, 94. Now he’s throwing harder. I had confidence, but it was his decision and it paid off. It was a good decision by him. I was really fine with it.”
Indeed, Bogaerts had been alerted to the possibility that Carp might replace him, and so the moment did not catch him off guard. Instead, he was able to enjoy Carp’s game-winning knock from the dugout.
“I was good with it,” said Bogaerts. “He got a hit and we won.”
While Bogaerts’ contributions were not visible in the victory, his evident comfort on the field and understanding of game situations was nonetheless apparent.
“There’s a calmness about him that he’s shown in a short period of time,” said Farrell. “He plays the game with ease.”
Yet while he exuded a calmness and self-confidence, the top Red Sox prospect also did little to mask his excitement regarding his first start and at-bat at Fenway, with his mother, uncle, brother and sister all on hand from Aruba to see him.
“Awesome. Awesome. I’m just thankful for every moment I get a chance to be on the field,” said Bogaerts. “Who expected me to be here? Just enjoy every inning, every at-bat. Hopefully it’s a few of many more to come.”

MLB: Boston Red Sox v.s Baltimore Orioles August 27, 2013

BOSTON -- Xander Bogaerts jogged in from right field and walked down the steps of the home dugout at Fenway Park for the first time on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Sox's top prospect wasn't expecting about 25 reporters, many holding video cameras with bright lights attached. But that's part of the gig as Boston's shortstop of the future. He understands it. Always has.
Hopeful of making his first appearance at Fenway during a three-game series with the Orioles that began Tuesday, Bogaerts handled some difficult questions with grace and glee.
"I guess it's something natural for me," Bogaerts said.
Even with Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen on the mound for on Tuesday, manager John Farrell kept the right-handed-hitting Bogaerts out of the lineup in favor of the left-handed-hitting Stephen Drew. Chen has held left-handers to a .191 average this year, compared to a .262 average against right-handers.
"I'm not going to turn away from Stephen Drew," Farrell said. "He's been a very good player for us. And probably Game 7 after he came back from the DL to now, he's been one of our most consistent hitters. He's been a very good shortstop defensively for us. And I just don't want to let the splits of a given starter determine and cause us to turn away from a guy who has been very good for us."
Bogaerts, who entered as a defensive replacement in the Red Sox's 13-2 rout, understood the decision.
"These guys played 120 games without me," he said. "I'm just here to contribute and do the best I can to win some games while I'm in there."
Tonight the Boston Red Sox will face the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10pm watch it LIVE on duckblabber.blogspot.com

Central American and Caribbean Championship: Osh Lopez & Annelaine Jacobs with tremendous results.

Recently the two strongest Aruban players in mens division & womens division represented Aruba at the Central American and Caribbean Championship (CAC) U-20 in San Salvador, El Salvador. Referring of Candidate Master (CM) Jasel “Osh” Lopez (19 years) &  Woman Candidate Master Annelaine Jacobs (17 years). Both went with an so called “travel grant” from Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), which is after FIFA the worlds biggest sport federation.
FIDE has a Development Fund where they give athletes from countries in development , called  CACDEC the opportunity to compete in international tournaments , seeing that in these countries many times they do not have the sufficient financial funds. When there are certain regional tournaments being played in the Americans, FIDE chooses 3 or 4 talented players . That is how Osh & Annelaine got the opportunity to participate at the CAC U-20, Despite the fact that Annelaine is only 17 years old at the end of the year she will represent Aruba at the CAC U-18 which will be organised in Costa Rica. We have to mention that Osh recieved 3 travel grants already : in 2011 for the CAC U-20 (Venezuela), in 2012 for the Pan American U-20 (Brazil) & CAC U-20 (El Salvador).

The Central American & Caribbean Championship U-20 was organised from August 9 to 14 in the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador. CM Osh played in the open category, where a total d of 46 players from 14 countries participated. The participating countries were Aruba, Barbados, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago & Dominican Republic.
In the first half of the tournament, which  9 rounds, Osh lost 2 of his 4 matches, but recuperated  tremendously, winning 4 of his last 5 matches. He managed to finish in 7th place with a score of 6 points out of 9 games, result of 5 wins, 2 ties & 2 loses. Despite this being a tremendous result for Osh, however he did manage to score higher in the CAC U-20, which was in 2011 in Venezuela where he finished in 5th place, which is at the same time the best position Aruba ever obtained at an  CAC in Open Category.

WCM Annelaine Jacobs also played tremendously well for her it was the first time that she particpated in an Central American & Caribbean Championship. At the same time she is the 2nd Aruban female player who participated in an CAC. In 2005, Stacey Caton managed to finish in 10th place at the CAC U-20 which took place in Barbados.
WCM Annelaine participated in the Female Category, where a total of 27 players from 10 countries particpated. The participating countries were Aruba, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Pto. Rico, Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago & Venezuela.
Just like Osh, Annelaine lost her first 2 games out of 4, but in the second half of the tournament she  ta recuperated greatly winning 3 and tying 1 of her last 5 matches. Annelaine finished in 9th place, which is the best position Aruba has ever placed at an CAC in Female Category. Annelaine scored 5 points our of 9 games, Result of 4 games won, 2 ties & 3 loses.

These scores show that Aruba ta progresing very well in regional youth chess, where in the last 2 to 3 years they managed very good results on international level. We have to remark that Osh & Annelaine could have finished among one of the three first placed if they won their last match.
Duck Blabber congratulates both Osh & Annelaine with their presentation.

PWA ALACATI WORLD CUP: Aruban windsurfer Sarah-Quita Offringa Dominates to claim event win!

The final day of the PWA Pegasus Airlines World Cup saw two more eliminations completed for both the men and women as the Meltemi wind continued to blow for much of the day. At the end of the day Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) battled his way back to the top of the rankings to secure the event victory, with one bullet and a second place today. Meanwhile, in the women’s fleet Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins) continued to dominate with back-to-back elimination victories on the final day to emphatically claim the event win, but the biggest news of the day involves Delphine Cousin (JP / NeilPryde) who will remember this day forever, after clinching her maiden world title as she was crowned the 2013 PWA Women’s Slalom World Champion.

Women Elimination 4 Women’s Winners’ Final
The first winners’ final started under dramatic circumstances as Fulya Unlu (Starboard / Severne) mistimed her start as she was disqualified from the proceedings. Upon the restart Sarah-Quita Offringa made a brilliant start to the final to match into the lead from the outset and the Aruban gem only extended her lead over the remainder of the course, with a combination of superb gybes and a supreme top speed. Behind her Lena Erdil (Patrik / Loft Sails / Mystic / AL360) and Karin Jaggi (Starboard / Severne) collided at the first mark, which allowed Maria Andres (Patrik / Gun Sails / Mystic) to overtake into third place behind Delphine Cousin (JP / NeilPryde). Over the remainder of the course Cousin closed slightly on Offringa but it wasn’t enough as the French lady had to settle for second place with Andres and Dilara Uralp (JP / NeilPryde) finishing in third and fourth place respectively.

Women's Elimination 5 Women's winner's final
Sarah-Quita Offrina led once again into the first mark in the second winners’ final of the day in front of Karin Jaggi (Starboard / Patrik), Marion Mortefon (Starboard / Severne) and Valerie Arrighetti (Tabou / Gaastra / Mystic). As she has done over the entirety of the week Offringa stepped on the gas to build a huge lead over Arrighetti, Dilara Uralp and Cagla Kubat (Starboard / Patrik). In the end Offringa claimed an accomplished victory ahead of Arrighetti, Gelly Skarlatou - who achieved her best finish of the week - and Marion Kaplas (Starboard / Severne) in fourth place.

Overall Rankings at the PWA Pegasus Airlines World Cup - Women’s Slalom

PWA ALACATI WORLD CUP: Day 5 recap Aruban Sarah-Quita Offringa Still in 1st place!

Day 5: The Meltemi wind returns to deliver an intense day of ballistic slalom
After two days of light and frustrating winds the Turkish Meltemi wind’s finally returned on day five of the PWA Pegasus Airlines World Cup, to provide a brilliant day of racing. After almost six hours of competition Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / North) now finds himself at the top of the men’s rankings, whilst Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins) maintains her lead at the top in the women’s, after another assured display, overall.
Women’s  Elimination Two Winners’ Final
Sarah-Quita Offringa picked up exactly where she left off from - after her victory in the opening elimination - as she led from start to finish with an accomplished display in elimination two. Valerie Arrighetti (Tabou / Gaastra / Mystic) was pushed all the way by Ayako Suzuki (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic), but the reigning world champion eventually pulled away to claim second place, with Suzuki in third. Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) started well but eventually had to settle for fourth place.
Women's Elimination Three Winners’ Final
The second winners’ final of the day started under dramatic circumstances as Sarah-Quita Offringa and Valerie Arrighetti collided on the start line, however both women made quick recoveries, but not quite quick enough, as Delphine Cousin (JP / NeilPryde) held the lead into the first mark with Cagla Kubat (Starboard / Loft Sails) and Melek Toraman (Starboard / Loft Sails) just behind as Offringa and Arrighetti approached in fourth and fifth place. Cousin looked confident in the lead and it wasn’t long until the young French lady was claiming victory - as she mounts a serious challenge for the world title - ahead of local hero Kubat and Offringa - who eventually fought her way back to third - with Dilara Uralp (JP / NeilPryde) producing a great performance to clinch fourth.
Tomorrow’s forecast promises more wind to hopefully deliver a thrilling climax to a superb week here in Alacati.

Aruban windsurfer Sarah-Quita Offringa comented : "Wooot wooooot wooooot ! a 1st and a 3rd finish today and with that still leading the rankings! whaaat ! one more day to go. AWO TIN KOOOO!! "
