New York: Xander Bogaerts crushed his first career homer over the visitor's bullpen in left field at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
He finished 2- for-4 and added a double, three RBI and two runs scored. BOgaerts entered the game without any extra base hit in 20 big league at bats. The 20 year old is one of the best prospects in baseball, but he'd accrued only one plate appearance since September 2 prior to yesterday. Bogaerts is worth rostering in AL-only formats, but he simply won't play enough to have a chance at mixed league relevance.
After hitting his first major league home run here today, Xander Bogaerts didn’t get the silent treatment typically reserved for rookies.
Instead, he got his teammates’ admiration.
“I wasn’t doing that at (age) 20, that’s for sure,” Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes said. “We can’t forget that, in between the lines and behind the scenes and stuff, the kid is 20 and is a shortstop. Not too many shortstops with that power. A couple of good defensive plays and just carrying himself like a pro. Pretty good day at Yankee Stadium for him.”
Added first baseman Mike Napoli, “It’s a special moment in his career, and we’re all excited for him. He’s got a lot of talent, and it was just something good to see.”
Bogaerts was the youngest Red Sox player to hit a homer since Dwight Evans on Sept. 20, 1972. Evans was 21 days younger than Bogaerts.
According to ESPN, Bogaerts' blast against Yankees reliever Jim Miller traveled 443 feet, clearing the bullpen in left field. But Bogaerts didn't see where the ball landed. As he swung, his calf cramped up and he looked down rather than following the flight of the ball.
“I knew I hit it good, but I didn’t know it was gone,” Bogaerts said. “I was more worried about the cramp.”
Needless to say, the cramp dissipated, and Bogaerts was able to celebrate hitting his first homer on his mother's birthday.
"You know, until today, I wasn't sharp at all," Bogaerts said. "I was bad at BP. I just went back to my leg kick. I always had my leg kick. I went back to it. And I got some new bats, I tried them out and it worked out good. It's a credit to the bat."
